MORIWAKI IP, PC (Japan) together with PATENTANWALTSKANZLEI HINKELMANN (Germany) will be hosting a seminar in Kyoto, JAPAN on November 22, 2019. The topics are: “Appeal Proceedings before the EPO including the new Rules effective January 1, 2020” in the first half; and “Recent case law in the Federal Supreme Court” in the second half.

Speaker: Dr. Klaus Hinkelmann (European Patent Attorney European Trademark and Design Attorney)

Dr. Klaus Hinkelmann studied Chemistry and Mathematics at Freiburg University and obtained his doctorate in the field of electrically conductive polymers. He subsequently did post-doctoral research in the Department of Physics under Prof. Heeger (Nobel Prize 2000) and Prof. Wudl at the University of California in Santa Barbara, USA. From 1989 until 2000 he worked in the Patents Division of BASF AG.

As a patent attorney, Dr. Hinkelmann trained in several American and Japanese patent-attorney offices. He represented BASF Patent Division in East-Asia in Japan from 1995 to 1998. Dr. Hinkelmann also worked for large patent-attorney firms in Munich prior to starting his own practice in 2004.
Dr. Hinkelmann deals primarily in patent and trademark law. His technical experience includes the fields of polymers, optical recording media, toners, adhesives, hygiene products, household appliances, foamed materials, optics, organic batteries and displays.

In addition, Dr. Hinkelmann has a sound knowledge of Japanese patent and trademark law. He authored the standard work Gewerblicher Rechtsschutz in Japan – Patente, Marken, Gebrauchsmuster, Designs und Know-how (Legal Protection of Industrial Property in Japan – Patents, Trademarks, Utility Models, Designs and Know-How), of which a completely revised 3rd edition has been published in December 2018, and is author and co-author of numerous other publications and books in this area. Dr. Hinkelmann also frequently lectures on these topics.

Masashi Moriwaki is an authorized patent and trademark attorney admitted in Japan. He has been around this IP practice area for about 20 years including an in-house IP practitioner at Panasonic. He is a president of MORIWAKI IP, P.C. based in Kyoto and Tokyo. Also, he has been working at IP high court of Japan as a technical advisor to Judge since 2008.
